The Gosling Research Institute for Plant Preservation (GRIPP) is located in the Department of Plant Agriculture on the University of Guelph campus in Guelph, Ontario. GRIPP came into existence as an idea to develop an in vitro conservation program for Canadian plant biodiversity which was needed urgently but did not exist. There are 3 components to GRIPP’s mission: (1) Research on conservation of endangered plants and resistance against diseases that kill them; (2) Education to enhance awareness of the importance of plants and ecosystems and their impact on our health; and (3) Potential application of technologies developed at GRIPP for conservation and commercialization of plant biodiversity of agricultural and ecological significance.
As a research institute GRIPP is unique, training research personnel in fields related to plant tissue culture, cryobiology, plant chemistry, molecular biology, physiology, and plant production systems. In addition to our plant tissue culture and controlled environment growth facilities, the institute features an integrated cryopreservation facility dedicated to conserving endangered and threatened species, the first of its kind in Canada. GRIPP’s novel approach of merging conservation strategies with commercialization provides a unique environment for training upcoming researchers in fundamental and applied aspects of plant conservation.
Research
GRIPP initiates and develops multifaceted research programs to further its conservation mandate.
Education
GRIPP supports training of individuals from all academic backgrounds in areas related to plant propagation and conservation.
Service
GRIPP provides resources, expertise, and access to germplasm for conservation and commercialization of plant biodiversity.

The Gosling Foundation
GRIPP is primarily funded by the Gosling Foundation, Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
The Gosling Foundation is a registered private Canadian Foundation. Its interests include environmental education with particular emphasis in developing appreciation and awareness of nature to prompt its protection, and protection of ecologically significant land through a variety of means including acquisition.
