Dr. Max Jones Hired For GRIPP Faculty Position

GRIPP is pleased to announce that Dr. Max Jones will be taking up the Professorship in Integrated Plant Production Systems for Vegetatively Propagated Horticulture Species at the University of Guelph in the Department of Plant Agriculture effective July 15, 2014. This position is supported by the generous gift of $ 2 million gift to the University from Philip and Susan Gosling.

Max completed his BSc and MSc here at the University of Guelph and obtained his PhD from the University of British Columbia on “Investigations into the Morphological, Agronomic and Nutritional Diversity within Breadfruit (Artocarpus, Moraceae) as a Resource for Food Security.”

Currently, Dr. Jones has an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship and is working in Dr. Praveen K Saxena’s lab with American elm (Ulmus americana) to create and in vitro germplasm collection; use cellular techniques to develop disease resistant germplasm; and investigate the role of phenolics in plant growth, development and morphogenesis.

Max brings a breadth of knowledge, experience in plant propagation, success with plant cell and tissue culture of difficult species, insights into plant development mechanisms and international experience to his new role. He will share in the mission of GRIPP to preserve endangered species through research, education and service with Dr. Saxena, Director of GRIPP.
